Patent Drawing in Gothenburg.

Patent drawing Gothenburg engineers rely on for PRV, EPO and USPTO filings - automotive, bearings, battery and life-science figures drawn to pass form review.

A patent drawing Gothenburg filing depends on is almost never drawn for a single office. Västra Götaland exports its inventions: a Torslanda driveline concept goes to the PRV in Stockholm, into a European application at the EPO, and into a US national phase, and the same sheets have to survive form review in all three. Gothenburg’s particular problem is that nothing in the chain is local – not the patent office, not the court, not the UPC division. This page sets out where the figures actually go, what the local industries demand of them, and the seven rules that decide whether they clear first time.

Where a patent drawing Gothenburg applicant files – and why none of it is local

There is no patent office in Gothenburg. The Swedish Intellectual Property Office – Patent- och registreringsverket, universally the PRV – operates from Valhallavägen 136 in Stockholm, with a further site in Söderhamn. Sweden’s second city, and the centre of its automotive industry, files 400-odd kilometres away.

That distance is administrative rather than practical, because everything is filed electronically. What matters is the route. A Gothenburg applicant is normally choosing between three, and often uses all three across one family:

  • A national Swedish application at the PRV, examined in Swedish or English.
  • A European application at the EPO, which is available because Sweden is an EPC contracting state, leading either to a unitary patent or to national validations.
  • A PCT application, where the PRV itself is unusually useful.

That last point is worth dwelling on. The PRV is a PCT Receiving Office, an International Searching Authority and an International Preliminary Examining Authority – one of only around twenty-five offices worldwide holding that status, and it has been doing the work since the late 1970s. A Gothenburg applicant can file internationally with the PRV and have the PRV conduct the international search, which keeps the whole first phase in Swedish hands and in one drawing standard. Our guide to how to file a patent in Sweden works through the three routes in detail.

The consequence for the figures is simple. Because the PRV, the EPO and the USPTO all sit in the same family, the sheets must be drawn to the strictest member of the set from the start rather than redrawn at each border.

The Gothenburg industries that shape the figures

Drawing work is not generic, and a patent drawing Gothenburg brief looks different from a Stockholm or a Basel one. The regional filing base is unusually mechanical, which pushes the figure set toward the hardest parts of 37 CFR 1.84.

Automotive and mobility. Volvo Cars is headquartered here and develops and builds at Torslanda, where it is the largest private employer in the region; the Volvo Group’s truck and construction-equipment business is also Gothenburg-based, and Polestar runs its electric-performance programme from the city. Regional automotive employment runs to roughly 25,000 people directly. These are assembly inventions, and assembly inventions mean exploded views, sectional views and sheet-spanning reference numerals – the three things most likely to draw an objection.

Bearings and rotating machinery. SKF has been headquartered in Gothenburg since its founding, and bearing, seal and condition-monitoring cases bring tightly nested cross-sections where hatching has to distinguish materials without going illegible at reproduction size.

Electrification. Battery and powertrain programmes attached to the Volvo platforms generate cell, module and thermal-management cases – a mix of sectional mechanical views, wiring schematics and block diagrams in a single family.

Life science. AstraZeneca’s major research site at Mölndal, immediately south of the city, feeds chemical and formulation cases. Here the drawings are structures, reaction schemes, tables and dose-response graphs rather than machinery, and 37 CFR 1.84 expressly allows chemical and mathematical formulae, tables and waveforms to be filed as drawings – but they still have to meet the same line-quality and lettering rules as a gearbox.

Software, telecom and automated driving. Ericsson, the Lindholmen Science Park cluster and the region’s autonomous-driving developers file method inventions whose only figures are flowcharts and block diagrams. Both the USPTO and the EPO accept these, but they are judged as drawings, and we set out the specifics in our note on patent drawings for software inventions.

Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg add a steady stream of university-origin filings, which arrive as research figures and almost always need redrawing to formal standard.

Swedish and European drawing standards, as they stand in 2026

Sweden has no separate national drawing aesthetic to learn. The PRV applies the Swedish Patents Act and its implementing regulations, and in practice a figure set drawn to EPO and USPTO standard is accepted without complaint. The live question is which of those two standards binds, and one European rule changed recently enough that it is still being miscited.

Rule 46 EPC, which used to govern the form of the drawings, was deleted with effect from 1 February 2023, together with Rule 49(3) to (12) EPC. Presentation requirements are now set by a Decision of the President of the EPO and reproduced in the EPO Guidelines for Examination, Part A, Chapter IX. Any drawing brief or opinion still citing Rule 46 EPC as live authority is working from pre-2023 material. We keep the current position in our breakdown of the EPO Guidelines A-IX on drawings.

A second European change matters for the electrification and life-science work: the EPO began accepting colour drawings on 1 October 2025. The USPTO did not follow. In a US utility application, colour drawings still require a petition under 37 CFR 1.84(a)(2), so a colour figure that is now unremarkable in Munich will stop a US filing unless a greyscale equivalent travels with it.

On the US side the measurable rules are the ones that decide first-pass acceptance:

  • Sheet size under 1.84(f): either 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm (A4) or 21.6 cm by 27.9 cm (8.5 by 11 inches). Swedish applicants naturally work in A4, which is permitted – but the set must be consistent.
  • Margins under 1.84(g): at least 2.5 cm at the top, 2.5 cm on the left, 1.5 cm on the right and 1.0 cm at the bottom.
  • Line quality under 1.84(l): durable, black, sufficiently dense and dark, uniformly thick and well defined.
  • Lettering under 1.84(p): reference characters, numbers and letters at least 0.32 cm (1/8 inch) high.

Design cases run on a different rule entirely. Under 37 CFR 1.152 a design application needs enough views for a complete disclosure of the appearance, solid black surface shading is not permitted except to represent the colour black or colour contrast, and photographs and ink drawings may not be combined as formal drawings in one application. For the consumer-product and vehicle-styling filings that come out of this region, that last prohibition catches people out regularly.

For the PCT leg, PCT Rule 11 sets the physical standard, and national phases generally accept a set drawn to it – which is why a Gothenburg family that starts at the PRV as Receiving Office can usually travel without redrawing.

Where Gothenburg patent disputes are actually heard

This is the part that surprises local engineering teams, and it is the single most distinctive feature of litigating from Gothenburg. You do not litigate a patent in Gothenburg. Gothenburg District Court has no patent jurisdiction.

Sweden concentrated all intellectual property litigation in one forum in 2016. First instance is the Patent and Market Court – Patent- och marknadsdomstolen – which sits as part of Stockholm District Court and has exclusive jurisdiction for the whole country. Appeals go to the Patent and Market Court of Appeal, Patent- och marknadsöverdomstolen, which sits within the Svea Court of Appeal, also in Stockholm; onward appeal to the Supreme Court is tightly restricted. A Volvo supplier in Mölndal and a start-up on Lindholmen are both Stockholm litigants.

European patents add a second forum. Sweden ratified the UPC Agreement, and it shares the Nordic-Baltic Regional Division with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The division’s seat and sub-registry are in Stockholm, hearings may also be held in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, and the contracting states designated English as the language of proceedings. For a Gothenburg business that is a genuine advantage: the local forum for a European patent dispute runs in English by design, not by concession. Our overview of patent litigation in Sweden covers the choice between the two tracks.

Why does the venue change how the drawings are prepared? Because in both forums the figures are construed as part of the disclosure. A sectional view that is ambiguous about whether two components are integral or merely adjacent is an invitation to an infringement argument you did not intend to have, and in an English-language UPC proceeding that ambiguity is read by judges from four jurisdictions.

Keeping one figure set usable at the PRV, the EPO and the USPTO

The economical approach for a Gothenburg family is one master set drawn to the strictest common denominator, not three regional sets. In practice that means a small number of deliberate choices made before filing.

  • Draw in greyscale, deliver colour separately. The EPO accepts colour since October 2025; the USPTO still wants a petition. A greyscale master with a colour variant held in reserve satisfies both without a redraw.
  • Use A4 throughout. It is permitted at the USPTO under 1.84(f) and it is what the PRV and EPO expect. Mixing A4 and letter across one set is a pointless objection.
  • Fix lettering height at 0.32 cm or above. The US floor is the highest of the three, so meeting it clears all of them.
  • Keep one reference-numeral table for the whole family. Automotive assemblies run across many sheets, and a numeral that means one thing in Figure 3 and another in Figure 11 is the most common substantive drawing defect we see in mechanical cases.
  • Never combine photographs with line drawings in a design application – 1.152 forbids it outright.

Where a family later needs a continuation or a divisional, resist the temptation to improve the figures at the same time: changes have to stay inside the parent’s disclosure. We set out the limits in our guide to continuation application drawings.

Why the drawings have to be right at filing, not at grant

Drawing defects are cheap to fix and expensive to carry. The cost is not the redraw – it is the sequence it triggers.

A form objection at the USPTO arrives as a notice requiring replacement sheets, which must be labelled in the top margin and must reproduce every figure that appeared on the sheet being replaced even when only one figure changed. That is a round trip measured in months, and it lands in the same window as substantive prosecution, where attention is better spent elsewhere.

The harder problem is that drawings are disclosure. Once the application is filed, 35 U.S.C. 132(a) bars any amendment that introduces new matter, and the European equivalents in Article 123(2) EPC and Article 76(1) EPC are applied strictly. If a figure omitted a feature at filing, you generally cannot add it later – you can only file again and accept the later date. For a Gothenburg automotive supplier filing into a crowded driveline or battery field, that interval is often where the relevant prior art appears.

The economics therefore favour front-loading. An audit of the figure set before filing costs a fraction of one office-action response and removes the entire category of risk.

How PerspireIP handles patent drawing Gothenburg work

We work from whatever the engineering team already has – CAD exports from the Torslanda and Mölndal toolchains, inventor sketches, reaction schemes, screen captures of an HMI, or a research figure from a Chalmers group – and return a formal set drawn to the offices you name.

Each brief gets the same treatment: confirm the filing routes, draw to the strictest standard in that set, run a form check against 37 CFR 1.84 or 1.152 and the EPO Guidelines Part A Chapter IX, reconcile every reference numeral against the specification text, and flag anything in the existing figures that would attract an objection. Swedish and English working language, and figures delivered as filing-ready sheets rather than images you have to reformat.

Gothenburg sits in a wider Nordic practice: we handle the same work in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Oslo, and the full Swedish service range is set out on our Sweden hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a patent office in Gothenburg?

No. The Swedish Intellectual Property Office (PRV) operates from Valhallavägen 136 in Stockholm, with a further site in Söderhamn. Gothenburg applicants file electronically with the PRV, at the EPO, or through the PCT – none of which requires a local presence.

Can the PRV carry out the international search on my PCT application?

Yes. The PRV is a PCT Receiving Office and also an International Searching Authority and International Preliminary Examining Authority, and has held that role since the late 1970s. A Gothenburg applicant can file internationally with the PRV and have the PRV conduct the search.

Where would a patent dispute involving a Gothenburg company be heard?

In Stockholm. The Patent and Market Court, part of Stockholm District Court, has exclusive first-instance jurisdiction over Swedish IP litigation, with appeals to the Patent and Market Court of Appeal within the Svea Court of Appeal. Gothenburg District Court has no patent jurisdiction.

Which UPC division covers Sweden?

The Nordic-Baltic Regional Division, which Sweden shares with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Its seat and sub-registry are in Stockholm, hearings may also sit in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, and the language of proceedings is English.

Is Rule 46 EPC still the authority for the form of drawings?

No. Rule 46 EPC was deleted with effect from 1 February 2023, along with Rule 49(3) to (12) EPC. Drawing presentation requirements are now set by a Decision of the President of the EPO and reproduced in the EPO Guidelines, Part A, Chapter IX.

Can I file the same colour figures at the EPO and the USPTO?

Not without an extra step. The EPO has accepted colour drawings since 1 October 2025, but a US utility application still requires a petition for colour under 37 CFR 1.84(a)(2). The practical answer is a greyscale master set with a colour variant held for the European leg.
