Where Revenue Comes From

Monetization Starts With Evidence, Not Intent

A licensing programme succeeds or fails on whether you can show a counterparty that their product practises your claims. Everything below is built to produce that evidence before any approach is made.

Use evidence first. We identify products already reading on your claims and chart the mapping element by element, so the first conversation opens from a documented position
Targets ranked by exposure. Counterparties are prioritised by how squarely they read on the claims and how commercially significant the feature is to their product
Rates you can defend. Royalty benchmarks drawn from comparable licences in the same field, apportioned to the patented feature rather than to whole-product revenue
Route chosen per asset. Licensing, sale, cross-licence, or partnership — compared on expected return and on the relationships you need to preserve

Routes to Value

Four Ways an Asset Can Pay

Licensing is the most familiar route, not always the best one. Each asset is assessed against all four before a programme is recommended.

Licensing Programme

Recurring royalties from parties already practising the claims. Highest ongoing return, longest path, and the route that most depends on quality of use evidence.

Sale or Assignment

A single payment that removes maintenance cost and enforcement burden. Suits assets outside your core roadmap or families you no longer intend to defend.

Cross-Licence

Trading access rather than cash, typically to resolve a mutual infringement position with a competitor without either side litigating.

Partnership & Transfer

Technology transfer, joint development, or spin-out where the value is in the know-how around the patent as much as the claims themselves.

Signals

When a Portfolio Is Ready to Monetize

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this service

What is IP monetization?

IP monetization is the process of converting intellectual property you already own into revenue — through licensing, sale or assignment, strategic partnership, or enforcement-backed settlement. It starts from evidence that someone is practising your claims, because that evidence is what gives a licensing conversation leverage.

Which patents are actually monetizable?

The assets worth pursuing are those with claims that read on a product currently on the market, sufficient remaining term to matter commercially, and coverage in the jurisdictions where that product is made or sold. Age and citation count are poor predictors on their own; evidence of use is the deciding factor.

How are royalty rates determined?

Rates are benchmarked against comparable licences in the same technology field, adjusted for the strength of the asserted claims, the share of product value attributable to the patented feature, and the alternatives available to the licensee. We document the reasoning so the number survives scrutiny in negotiation.

Do you handle licensing negotiations, or only the analysis?

We prepare the evidence base — claim charts, use evidence, rate benchmarking and target identification — and support the negotiation alongside your counsel. Signing the agreement remains with your legal team, since the licence terms carry obligations only you can accept.

Is licensing the only route?

No. Depending on the asset and your position, outright sale, a cross-licence that resolves a competitor conflict, a joint venture or technology transfer, or a defensive contribution to a patent pool may return more value than a licensing programme. We compare the routes before recommending one.

How long does a monetization programme take?

Identifying targets and building the evidence base typically takes weeks. The negotiation that follows is measured in months and depends on the counterparty. Tell us the portfolio size and the technology field and we will scope realistic timelines within one business day.
