A patent drawing Turin filing takes a route that surprises engineers who have only filed in the United States: you can hand the application across a counter at the Camera di commercio di Torino, but the drawings will be read by an examiner at the European Patent Office before UIBM says anything substantive about patentability. Piedmont’s automotive and aerospace engineering base produces exactly the kind of assembly-heavy disclosure where figures carry the technical weight. Getting the sheets right at the start is cheaper than fixing them after a search report lands.

Where a patent drawing Turin application is actually filed

Italy’s national office is the Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi (UIBM), which sits under the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy in Rome. You do not have to go to Rome. Italian practice lets you deposit a patent, utility model, design or trademark application through any Chamber of Commerce, and in Piedmont that means the Camera di commercio di Torino.

The Turin filing desk is at Via San Francesco da Paola 24, 10123 Turin. Paper deposits are taken on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, from 9:00 to 12:00, by appointment only, using the applicant form published on the UIBM site. The same building hosts Turin’s PATLIB centre, part of the European patent information network, which is a genuinely useful resource for searching historic Piedmont filings before you commit to a figure set.

Electronic filing through the UIBM portal is the faster route and the one most firms use. Either way the formal requirements for the drawing sheets are identical โ€” the regulation says so explicitly โ€” so there is no formatting shortcut in choosing one channel over the other.

The UIBM drawing formalities that get enforced

Italian drawing requirements live in the implementing regulation to the Industrial Property Code: Ministerial Decree of 13 January 2010, no. 33, which implements Legislative Decree no. 30 of 10 February 2005. The core sheet rules are unglamorous and strictly applied:

  • A4 sheets โ€” 29.7 ร— 21 cm, on strong white paper.
  • Indelible black lines and characters. Line work must reproduce cleanly; faint CAD hairlines are a recurring problem.
  • Margins of at least 2.5 cm on the top, bottom, left and right of every sheet.
  • The same formats apply to electronic filings โ€” attaching a PDF does not relax the page geometry.

The description must also briefly describe the drawings and must detail at least one mode of carrying out the invention with reference to the figures. In practice this is where thin applications come apart: the sheets show eight features and the description accounts for three of them. An examiner reading a Turin automotive filing will notice.

Reference numerals have to be consistent between the figures and the description, and every numeral that appears on a sheet should be findable in the text. It is a mechanical check, which is precisely why it is worth doing before filing rather than in response to an objection.

Why the EPO reads your Italian drawings

This is the feature of Italian practice that most changes how a drawing set should be prepared. Since 1 July 2008, novelty searches for Italian national patent applications are carried out by the European Patent Office on UIBM’s behalf. The EPO returns a search report with a written opinion on patentability, generally within around nine months of filing, and UIBM forwards it to the applicant. Claims have to be made available in English for that search to proceed.

The practical consequence: a patent drawing Turin set that satisfies the bare Italian sheet rules but ignores EPO drawing practice is working against you. Figures that an EPO examiner finds hard to read produce a weaker, vaguer search opinion, and that opinion follows the family. If you expect to extend to a European patent or a PCT filing later โ€” and most Piedmont industrial applicants do โ€” prepare the sheets to EPO standards from day one and the Italian requirements are satisfied automatically.

That means disciplined line weights, no shading that collapses into black, numerals placed clear of the line work, and sectional views that actually explain the hatching convention they use.

Where Turin patent disputes are heard

Italy concentrates industrial property litigation in specialised business divisions โ€” the sezioni specializzate in materia di impresa created by Legislative Decree no. 168 of 27 June 2003. Turin has one.

  • Tribunale di Torino, sezione specializzata in materia di impresa โ€” first instance for patent, design and unfair-competition disputes arising in the Turin district, and also the competent venue for Valle d’Aosta.
  • Corte d’Appello di Torino โ€” the specialised division at appeal level.
  • Unified Patent Court โ€” Italy participates. The UPC’s Italian presence is in Milan, not Turin: a local division, plus the Milan section of the central division, which opened on 27 June 2024 and handles patents in IPC Section A (human necessities) without supplementary protection certificates.

So a Turin engineering company enforcing an Italian national patent goes to the Torino business court, while the same company enforcing a European patent with unitary effect is litigating in Milan or another UPC division. Both forums treat the drawings as part of the disclosure that defines what was taught, which is why figure quality turns up in validity arguments years after filing. Our work on patent drawings as prior art covers how figures get read back against a patent.

What Piedmont industry demands from a figure set

Turin’s filing profile is unusually mechanical, and it shapes what good drawings look like here.

  • Automotive. Stellantis has deep roots in Turin and Mirafiori, and Iveco is headquartered in the city. Powertrain, chassis and component filings mean exploded assembly views, sectional views through castings, and enough views to show how parts seat together.
  • Aerospace. Thales Alenia Space and Avio Aero anchor a substantial aerospace cluster in the Turin area. Structures and propulsion disclosures lean on sectional and cutaway views where internal geometry is the invention.
  • Industrial and transport design. Turin’s carrozzeria tradition still drives design filings, where the drawing is the protected subject matter rather than an illustration of it.
  • Research spin-outs. Politecnico di Torino feeds a steady stream of university filings, often with provisional-quality sketches that need converting into formal sheets.

For design rights the figures do the claiming, so view selection is a legal decision and not a drafting preference. For a mechanical utility filing the risk runs the other way: too few views, and the description is left asserting structure the sheets never show. Either way a patent drawing Turin project benefits from deciding the view list before anyone opens a CAD package.

Rule 46 EPC is gone โ€” cite the right European authority

If a drawing provider quotes you “Rule 46 EPC compliance”, they are quoting a rule that no longer exists. Rule 46 EPC was deleted with effect from 1 February 2023, together with Rule 49(3) to (12) EPC, as part of the EPO’s digital-transformation package. The presentation requirements moved into a Decision of the President published in the Official Journal, so the Office can adjust them without amending the Implementing Regulations.

The working text to rely on now is the EPO Guidelines for Examination, Part A, Chapter IX. Two points from it matter for Turin filings in particular. Text matter on drawings is limited to a single word or a few words where absolutely indispensable โ€” “section on AB” is fine, a block of Italian annotation is not, and keywords must be placed so they can be replaced by translations without disturbing the line work. And since 1 October 2025 the EPO accepts electronically filed drawings in colour or greyscale, provided they are contrast-rich and legible at 300 dpi.

The PCT was not changed. Rule 11.13(a) PCT still calls for black lines without colourings, so a single sheet set rarely satisfies UIBM, the EPO and the international phase simultaneously. We plan the variants deliberately rather than discovering the conflict at national-phase entry; our guide to EPO Guidelines A-IX sets out the detail.

Seven checks before you file in Turin

  1. Confirm the channel โ€” Camera di commercio di Torino counter deposit by appointment, or electronic filing through UIBM. The sheet rules are the same either way.
  2. Verify A4 geometry and 2.5 cm margins on every sheet, including continuation sheets.
  3. Check that line work is true black and survives reproduction; replace hairlines.
  4. Reconcile every reference numeral against the description, in both directions.
  5. Prepare to EPO drawing standards, because the EPO performs the search.
  6. Strip non-indispensable text from the sheets and keep remaining keywords translatable.
  7. Decide early whether the family is heading to a European patent, the UPC in Milan, or a PCT filing, and plan the colour and view variants accordingly.

Most drawing objections in Italian practice are formality objections, which means they are avoidable. They are also the cheapest thing in a patent file to get right, and the most expensive to leave until an examiner raises them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I file an Italian patent application in Turin rather than Rome?

Yes. The Camera di commercio di Torino at Via San Francesco da Paola 24 accepts patent, utility model, design and trademark deposits for UIBM, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings by appointment. Electronic filing through the UIBM portal is also available and is the faster route.

What format must drawings be in for a UIBM filing?

A4 sheets of 29.7 ร— 21 cm on strong white paper, in indelible black lines and characters, with margins of at least 2.5 cm on all four sides. Ministerial Decree 33/2010 applies the same formats to drawings attached to electronic filings.

Who searches an Italian patent application?

The European Patent Office has carried out novelty searches for Italian national applications on UIBM’s behalf since 1 July 2008, issuing a search report with a written opinion generally within about nine months of filing. Claims must be available in English for the search.

Which court hears patent disputes arising in Turin?

The specialised business division of the Tribunale di Torino, created by Legislative Decree 168/2003, with appeals to the Corte d’Appello di Torino. It also covers Valle d’Aosta. European patents with unitary effect are litigated before the Unified Patent Court, whose Italian seats are in Milan.

Is Rule 46 EPC still the European drawing rule?

No. Rule 46 EPC was deleted with effect from 1 February 2023 along with Rule 49(3)โ€“(12) EPC. European drawing presentation requirements now sit in a Decision of the President, and the working text is the EPO Guidelines, Part A, Chapter IX.

Can I file colour drawings in Turin?

Not for a paper UIBM deposit, which requires black lines. The EPO has accepted electronically filed colour and greyscale drawings since 1 October 2025 where they are contrast-rich at 300 dpi, but PCT Rule 11.13(a) still requires black lines, so variants are usually needed.
