Lund packs an improbable amount of patentable engineering into one small SkÃ¥ne city. Tetra Pak and Alfa Laval both run their global headquarters here. Axis Communications, the world leader in network video, sits in Ideon Science Park — Sweden’s first science park, opened in 1983 and now home to around 400 companies. MAX IV and the European Spallation Source put world-class synchrotron and neutron instrumentation on the city’s northern edge. A patent drawing Lund set therefore has to serve packaging machinery, heat transfer and separation, network video hardware, scientific instruments and Medicon Valley life science — and it has to do all of that against a Swedish drawing statute that is literally one sentence long, and a colour bar with no petition route. PerspireIP builds those sheets.
Where a patent drawing Lund filing is actually examined
There is no patent office in Lund. Sweden has one national office — PRV, Patent- och registreringsverket — and a Skåne applicant files to it electronically rather than across a counter. What matters locally is therefore not proximity but practice: PRV is a genuine examining office. It searches, it examines for novelty and inventive step, and it issues office actions.
That distinguishes Sweden from the registration-style offices elsewhere in Europe and it changes what a figure set is for. Your drawings will be read substantively, by an examiner forming a view on what the application discloses, not merely checked for sheet size.
What PRV does not run is a dedicated drawings-review function of the kind the USPTO built around its draughtspersons. So a defective patent drawing Lund set rarely produces a standalone formality notice. It surfaces folded into a substantive objection, or years later as an ambiguity about what was disclosed — by which point the cheap fix has expired.
The Swedish drawing statute is one sentence long
Most jurisdictions give you an itemised regulation. The United States spends a long rule on it; Italy devotes a dense article to paper, ink and reproduction process. Sweden gives you one sentence.
Section 4 of the Patents Decree (Patentkungörelse 1967:838), as amended, requires the description, drawings, claims and abstract to be executed in A4 (210 × 297 mm) in a form suitable for reproduction, with drawings in mörka, företrädesvis svarta linjer mot ljus, företrädesvis vit bakgrund — dark, preferably black lines against a light, preferably white background. That is the whole of the binding law on the form of the sheets.
The brevity is a trap rather than a gift, and the gap it leaves is specific: section 4 states no margins at all. There is no Swedish margin table. Neither does the Decree address reference signs, figure numbering or separate sheets.
So the working standard has to be imported, and the only sensible import is the international one. A set built to PCT drawing requirements — Rule 11.6 margins in particular — is stricter than section 4 on every axis and clears Sweden automatically. This inverts the usual advice: you cannot check a Lund filing against a detailed local rule, because none exists.
Note also that “suitable for reproduction” is a functional test, not a dimensional one. A technically A4 sheet whose hairlines disappear when copied fails section 4 even though its trim size is right.
Colour has no route in — and no petition either
Colour drawings are not accepted under Swedish national law. Section 4’s “dark lines on a light background” leaves no room for them, and WIPO’s PCT Applicant’s Guide states the position flatly in the Swedish national chapter.
The part that catches Lund’s internationally-filing companies is that Sweden is now out of step with the two offices they deal with in the same week:
- The EPO has accepted colour and greyscale in electronically filed applications since 1 October 2025.
- The USPTO permits colour in a utility application on a granted petition under 37 CFR 1.84(a)(2), with the fee set by 37 CFR 1.17(h).
- Sweden has neither. No petition, no fee, no discretionary acceptance — the same hard position as France.
Section 4 also regulates lines, which matters for the instrumentation and network-video work done here. A view carrying its information in grey tone, gradient fill or photographic shading is not obviously compliant even where every pixel is dark-on-light. Hatching, stippling and conventional sectional shading are line techniques and travel safely; a soft grey render does not.
For CAD-heavy Lund engineering the practical step is to export a line-art view rather than a shaded render. Build the black-line set first: it is the only one that converts cleanly in every direction. We compare the regimes in colour patent drawings.
PRV wants reference signs, not sentences
Because the Decree is silent on content, the operative guidance is PRV’s own published patent guide — not statute, but what the examiner applies. It asks for black lines on a separate A4 sheet, and numerical or alphabetical reference signs keyed to the special part of the description.
On text it is strict: no explanatory text in the figures beyond short indications. PRV’s own published example of an acceptable indication is the single word “gas” — a useful calibration of how little wording is contemplated.
That bites hardest on exactly the subject matter Lund files most. Packaging-line flow diagrams, separation process schematics and network-video block diagrams all tempt a draughtsman into labelled boxes. Keep the labels to the minimum a reader needs and carry the explanation in the description.
One further rule is easy to miss: any text matter in the drawings must be in Swedish or English. A set arriving from a German or Japanese parent with native-language callouts needs relabelling before it is filed.
You may prosecute in English — and the drawings are never retranslated
This is the single most useful fact for Lund’s multinational filers, and it is routinely missed. PRV makes you elect Swedish or English at the outset for the description, claims and abstract.
Elect English and only a Swedish translation of the claims is required when PRV is about to grant. The English claims define the scope; the translation is for information. The description and the drawings are never retranslated.
For a Tetra Pak or Axis filing programme drafted in English that removes a whole cost line and, more importantly, a whole category of risk — translation drift between the language that was drafted and the language that is enforced. Compare Italy, where a national-phase entry demands the complete Italian text including the drawings.
It also means the drawing text rule above is the only translation obligation touching your figures. Get the callouts into Swedish or English once and the sheets are done.
The PCT route into Sweden is open at 31 months
Sweden’s PCT national phase is open — worth stating because several EPC neighbours closed theirs, and reaching those countries requires a European patent instead. From Lund you have a genuine choice of routes.
- 31 months to enter the Swedish national phase, under PCT Article 22(3) and Article 39(1)(b).
- A two-month translation grace period against an additional fee, where the filing fee was paid on time.
- Before the grant notification, the description and drawings may be amended to comply with PCT requirements.
- Sweden is also an EPC state, so validating a European patent remains fully available.
The practical consequence for figures is that a Rule 11-compliant set carries straight through. If the sheets were built to the international standard at priority, neither the national phase nor the European route asks you to redraw — and the European standard itself has moved. Rule 46 EPC was deleted with effect from 1 February 2023; European drawing formalities now live in the Decision of the President, Rule 49(2) EPC and the Guidelines at Part A, Chapter IX. A great deal of published guidance still cites Rule 46 as live law. We set out the current position in EPO Guidelines A-IX drawings, and the full Swedish picture in patent drawings in Sweden.
What Lund actually files — and the figures each case needs
A credible patent drawing Lund brief is shaped by an unusually concentrated local industrial base:
- Packaging and food processing. Tetra Pak is headquartered here. Filling and sealing machinery needs long process sequences, web paths and station-by-station sectional views — figure sets where consistent reference signs across dozens of views carry the disclosure.
- Heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Alfa Laval’s global headquarters, founded in Lund in 1883. Plate-pack geometry, separator internals and flow routing are sectional-view work, and the hatching conventions are where these sets fail.
- Network video and electronics. Axis Communications, the world leader in network video, in Ideon Science Park. Hardware plus image-processing claims mean enclosure views alongside block and flow diagrams — the diagrams that collide with PRV’s ban on explanatory text.
- Scientific instrumentation. MAX IV, a world-leading synchrotron, and the European Spallation Source, the world’s most powerful neutron source, both on Lund’s northern edge. Beamline and detector inventions need large assemblies broken into readable sheets.
- Life science and medtech. Lund University and the cross-Øresund Medicon Valley cluster, with Lund’s long dialysis and medical-device heritage. Device geometry, and graphs and flow charts where the claim is a method.
- Deep-tech spin-outs. Ideon Science Park, Sweden’s first, has around 400 companies and roughly 10,000 employees — a steady stream of first filings where the figures are the whole disclosure.

Where a Lund patent dispute is decided
Not in Lund, and not in Skåne. Sweden consolidated its intellectual-property, market and competition litigation in 2016 into the Patent and Market Court (Patent- och marknadsdomstolen) at Stockholm District Court, which holds exclusive nationwide competence. Appeals go to the Patent and Market Court of Appeal at the Svea Court of Appeal.
A Lund company does not sue before its local court. The action is filed in Stockholm, before judges who see nothing but these cases — the same concentration France applies through Paris.
Sweden is also a UPC contracting state and hosts the Nordic-Baltic Regional Division, seated in Stockholm with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, working in English. It is the UPC’s only regional division. For a unitary patent, or a classical European patent not opted out, that is the forum.
Why this belongs in a drawings brief: revocation is where added-matter and sufficiency arguments are run, and those are frequently argued on the figures — what a drawing did or did not disclose, whether an amendment introduced subject-matter visible only in a redrawn view. Sheets assembled casually at deposit become evidence a decade later. Our patent drawing services are built to that standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a patent office in Lund?
No. Sweden has a single national office, PRV (Patent- och registreringsverket), and Lund applicants file to it electronically. PRV is a genuine examining office: it searches and examines for novelty and inventive step rather than simply registering applications.
What are the drawing requirements for a Swedish patent filing?
Section 4 of the Patents Decree (1967:838) is the only binding rule and it is one sentence: A4 (210 × 297 mm), in a form suitable for reproduction, with dark — preferably black — lines on a light, preferably white background. It states no margins, so practice imports PCT Rule 11.6. PRV’s own patent guide supplies the rest: black lines on a separate A4 sheet and reference signs keyed to the description.
Are colour patent drawings allowed in Sweden?
No, and there is no petition route of the kind 37 CFR 1.84(a)(2) provides in the United States. Colour is not accepted under Swedish national law. This now puts Sweden out of step with the EPO, which has accepted colour and greyscale in electronically filed applications since 1 October 2025.
Can I prosecute a Swedish patent application in English?
Yes. PRV lets you elect Swedish or English at the outset for the description, claims and abstract. If you elect English, only a Swedish translation of the claims is required when PRV is about to grant, and the English claims define the scope. The description and drawings are never retranslated — though any text matter inside the drawings must itself be in Swedish or English.
What is the deadline for entering the Swedish national phase from a PCT application?
31 months from the priority date, under PCT Article 22(3) and Article 39(1)(b). A further two months is available against an additional fee where the filing fee was paid on time. Sweden’s national route is open, unlike several EPC neighbours that closed theirs and can only be reached through a European patent.
Where would a patent dispute involving a Lund company be litigated?
Before the Patent and Market Court at Stockholm District Court, which has exclusive nationwide competence over IP, market and competition cases following the 2016 consolidation, with appeal to the Patent and Market Court of Appeal at the Svea Court of Appeal. For a unitary patent or a European patent not opted out, the forum is the UPC’s Nordic-Baltic Regional Division, seated in Stockholm and working in English.
Can one figure set cover PRV, the EPO and the USPTO?
Usually yes, if it is built black-line to the international standard from the start. PCT Rule 11 is stricter than Swedish section 4 on every axis, and a Rule 11 set also satisfies current EPO practice under the Guidelines Part A, Chapter IX — Rule 46 EPC having been deleted with effect from 1 February 2023. The exception is colour: if a US case needs colour on petition, that set cannot be filed in Sweden.
