What is different about filing in the United Kingdom
This is the jurisdiction people most often get wrong. An EU trademark has not covered the United Kingdom since Brexit — if your only registration is an EUTM filed after 1 January 2021, you have no UK protection at all and need a separate UKIPO filing. The UKIPO also examines fast, often reporting within a fortnight.
How the UK filing process runs
- Clearance. We check the UK register for earlier marks that would block or narrow yours, before you spend a filing fee.
- Classes and specification. Goods and services drafted to the Nice classification — too narrow and you leave gaps, too broad and you invite refusal.
- Filing. Filed as a national trademark at UKIPO.
- Examination. An examination report usually issues within about 2 weeks — we respond to any objection as part of the fee.
- Opposition. 2 months from publication, extendable to 3. We monitor the window and advise if anything is filed.
