A utility application is a written instrument. It carries a specification that must satisfy 35 U.S.C. 112(a) — a written description sufficient to show possession of the invention, and enough detail to enable a skilled artisan to make and use it — followed by a claim set that can run to twenty claims or more, each defining the invention in words. Drawings support the text and, under 37 CFR 1.83(a), must show every feature recited in the claims.

  6. The international route is a different treaty. Foreign utility protection normally travels via the Patent Cooperation Treaty. Designs travel via the Hague Agreement, which the United States joined on 13 May 2015. They have different deadlines, different fee structures and different national-phase mechanics.
